The Crucifixion of Jesus
is a form of slow and painful execution in which the victim is tied or nailed to a large wooden cross and left to hang until dead. It was very shameful and was used for very bad crimes and traitors. The origins of crucifixion are in ancient Persia and Rome. Death was often sped up, because the guards in attendance couldn't leave until the victim was pronounced dead. Guards would often break the tibia or femur, stab the victim, or light a fire under the cross to suffocate the victim. Spectators watched as the man or woman was killed, this was meant to make them fear a death like that and not commit crime. Once the execution was done, the body would be left to hang as a warning.
The crucifixion of Jesus is a central event in the Christian religion. Jesus was said to be crucified at age 33. The Christian belief is that Jesus died for human's sins, so we could be forgiven and return to God. He was crucified on Good Friday, and was said to have risen from his tomb on Easter Sunday, three days later. In many churches art depicting the crucifixion is displayed.
Aside from religious beliefs, the crucifixion of Jesus is a true historical fact. The Romans executed him, most likely for being a well known Jewish figure. He had been proclaimed King of the Jews, which Rome considered a threat. The Roman governor at the time, Pontius Pilate, sentenced him to death.
